The Inmates are Running the Asylum

Brent and I have been diligently trying to teach the kids the importance of fresh, home cooked meals. A couple of weeks ago, they wanted pancakes for breakfast. We didn't have any mix and Brent told them that if they wanted pancakes to figure out how to make them. And that's exactly what they did. They made a few errors and they weren't the greatest pancakes, but they were edible. Doing this they discovered that they like to cook. Last night we had our first dinner, cooked completely by Brennan and Drew. They decided on Chinese Chicken Noodle Soup (This was actually a second choice to Drew's first, Rack of Lamb. This kid dreams big, what can I say?!) Brent and I were there to offer them assistance when needed, but I can proudly say that they did it all themselves. Dinner was delicious and I couldn't be anymore proud of them!! Not to mention that it was nice to have the night off. The boys have decided that they would like to cook dinner once a week! I LOVE IT!!!

Hey Amy! They are 9 and 12...well almost 12. They tried again this morning to make pancakes. It didn't go so well. They made buttermilk pancakes with only 2 of the 3 eggs and skim milk rather than buttermilk. They were difficult to choke down with a smile! I love that they are making mistakes and learning from them though!!

man, wish I had done better about making my kids eat healthier. They are in love with processed food. Now we have an uphill battle. Ignorance was bliss, now its gonna kill us. We are making daily changes, but they aren't up to soup, thats for sure.

Jamie, when I met Brent's kids they lived on chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese. They had never even eaten a peach before unless it came out of a can. They eat that way when they are with their mom, but here things are a different story. We don't allow anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup in the house. They have learned the boundaries and we have even caught them reading labels. They fought it HARD for a long time and many a night I threw my hands up and said I will NEVER cook for them again. But they mean too much to me and I would try again. We are now to the point were they actually LIKE zucchini, brussel sprouts, asparagus, and peppers. It makes me so proud to know that I am teaching them habits that they will take with them for the rest of their lives! Don't give up!!
